    When I told Marie it was her second birthday soon, she said "Then you will sing for me and I will cut a dinosaur cake." Apparently a precedent had been set two summers ago with a dinosaur cake for Jack. She'd seen him cutting his cake in the photos of that party, and concluded that's what happens when it's your birthday. Now Jack's cake was a real, shop-bought British affair (with many thanks to granny - he adored it): This rather laid down the gauntlet. So I decided not to compete and make my normal birthday cake (chocolate spunge, bound with chocolate spread, covered in chocolate icing, decorated with chocolate Smarties - do you see a pattern here?) and then add a cunning cunning thing - voila: He's now hanging god-like over our living room, looking on benignly. Actually, I think he is secretly judging us and disapproving. I call him the Bumba. When someone farts you can just about see the Bumba thinking "That offends me." I have to go now.     It is a simple sponge cake, for which I do not use any butter or its substitutes, but it is very moist because each layer is drizzled with a sweet punch, which I prepare for this purpose. To finish it, I use a French cream (crème patisserie), which is based on eggs and enriched with butter. Preparing such a cake is more labor intensive than just spreading a ready to use icing all over, but the whole preparation is not as complicated as it may seem, so this time I am putting a few more picture to explain all the steps.     Celebrate with a cake shaped like Cinderella's castle on her next birthday.

    Ingredients

    2 baked 9-inch square cakes
    Pink frosting
    4 baked cupcakes
    4 ice-cream cones
    Pink frosting
    Green colored sugar

    4 Hershey's Kisses
    Necco Wafers
    M&M candies
    2 cups Jell-O
    1 cup shredded coconut, tinted with green food coloring
    1 graham cracker

    Instructions

    Place one of the square cakes on a large platter. Frost, then layer with the second square cake.

    Place the cupcakes on top of the cake in each of the four corners. Top each cupcake with an inverted ice-cream cone. Frost the cupcakes and cones. Score the frosting with a fork to make the textured castle siding.

    Now, add candies. First, sprinkle the green sugar on the cones, then top each cone with a Hershey's Kiss. Outline the top of the cake with Necco Wafers. Create a castle door with more Necco wafers and M&M's.

    Surround the cake with the blue Jell-O and a ring of the green shredded coconut.

    Finally, place a graham cracker drawbridge over the moat, and invite the party guests to dig in. Serves 8 to 10.
